Reviews For Maxim Magazine

Why Maxim instead of Playboy?

There's all this talk in town about how this latest 'Men's Magazine' is grabbing the spotlight. I didn't know what people were talking about until I dug into the issue.

There have been making competitor magazine's that have been trying to mimic the success of GQ or even Playboy but to no avail. I won't bash them now...

Maxim, upon first glance, was probably just another imitation but this time, I was fooled. The covers are always provocative and when I dove headfirst into the issue, I didn't hit rock bottom. Instead, it was one splash of fun. Many, many glances later, I finally knew why Maxim was such a hit.

The articles were humorous, yet informative. Other magazines I've seen showcase women as men's objects but in this, women are worshipped. With respect to worship, oh my, while perusing my first magazine from front to back, I saw goddesses graphically displayed and if there was anything else I could ask for would've been for more pictures. After all, it's not because of fully-naked pictures that men enjoy the magazine so. It's because of half-naked pictures that make us want more out of Maxim! Maxim teases us with that by giving what we want but leaving a little behind for the imagination. That's what really kills. One more inch of skin would've been too much and we'd go back to Playboy. Besides, I don't think you get to see all these top-notch scantily-clad megadivas in another magazine, not even Playboy.

As for the rest of the magazine, if pictures speak a thousand words, the rest of the articles look miniscule in comparsion to the photos. Not wanting to neglect the quality of the articles themselves, I must comment on how entertaining they were too. Too bad I rummaged through the photos before getting a chance to read more articles...

Oh, and that was just my first issue. The second issue was yet quite another interesting experience. Just leaves you yearning for more and 30 days sure is long!

whoa! i think that chick is neked!!

as an avid reader of maxim i just wanna say... where do they get this stuff?!?! though guys surely buy the magazine mostly for the eye candy, as a girl i can say i actually read it!! can you believe it? with its witty, ever so cocky articles its highly entertaining. and who wouldnt love smart-ass answers for dumbass questions? though some times a little too much time is devoted to "intelligent" interviews with well, *ahem*, moron models, over-all these guys know what's happening!

Man alive. This magazine is a double dip cream dream thrillride. In case you have never seen Maxim, it is a mens magazine filled mostly with photos of scantily clad young female celebrities. Of course thats not all it contains. There are plenty of articles on how to please your woman, or on sports and fast cars. For the poor and geeky college student like myself however, its simply a Playboy that I'm not embarrassed to bring to the cashier.

The magazine does have some interesting topics for articles, but the writing itself is pretty poor. I will repeat however.. it has amazing pictures of such hotties as Jennifer Love Hewitt and that broad from Clarissa explains it all.

The In-Between

I love Playboy magazine. For years I've looked over the issues and come to realize that there are some really good articles within the magazine. But as I've perused it, I've also come to realize that the Playmates featured within are too perfect and airbrushed and don't provide the sensuality that I've come to find as attractive now a day.
On the other end, I subscribed to Men's Health about two years ago. I enjoyed the workout advice that it provided and some of the articles were very interesting and somewhat funny. Nevertheless, it never seemed to tackle the important issues on sexuality and politics and seldom did I find an interview as personals as those you find in Playboy. Moreover, I found it repetitive since every cover and article seemed to be the same time after time.
Then I discovered Maxim. At first, I passed it off as just another magazine similar to the rags found on my barber's coffee table. But as I looked over the pages of the magazine I slowly began to chuckle at the small but interesting bits of information scattered through out the magazine. I was also able to emerge myself in interviews and articles that dealt with the issues that are important to the men in my demographic.
But on top of this, the pictorials within the magazine are first rate. They are a tease to the eye. I do not charge the Playboy is too graphic. I respect their commitment to taste when displaying the human body. But the women of Maxim seem somewhat more real since they are clothed. And since they are more real they appear more approachable which is more appealing to me and many other men.
I now subscribe to all three magazines. They are right on top of MY coffee table. But when push comes to shove, I choose the middle ground and always seem to pick up Maxim first. What a great compromise.

A Great Men's Magazine... Finally!!

Maxim is one of the hottest men's magazines on the newsstands today. I was introduced to this magazine by a co-worker of mine, and have been reading it ever since. Its pictures of extremely hot women, funny jokes, hilarious letters to the editor, and cool gadgets are just a few of the many cool things about the magazine that I love. My favorite issue was the December '99 issue that featured Jennifer Love Hewitt. The letters to the editor left me in stitches. The jokes had me laughing out loud in large crowds, and the pictures had me drooling all over myself like a 2 year old. I would recommend this magazine to any guy from the age of 20-something all the way up to seventy-something. I'm sure it would work better than viagra, and would be a lot less expensive too.

A Woman's Review - Maxim Rocks!

Maxim is a great magazine! Funny, witty, sarcastic, blunt...all that and good articles too. There are so many "trendy" magazines out there, it gets so tiring reading the same garbage all of the time. Maxim really steps "out of the box" and offers a new perspective on numerous topics. Although most of the topics appeal to men...a lot of the information in this magazine is useful for women. These staff writers will really tell you like it is [ladies]...so, skip all the fluff you find in magazines like "GQ" and "Men's Journal"...get right to the meat of things with Maxim. On top of that, a good laugh is almost guaranteed! I'm not a subscriber but just about every guy I know is...from my brother to my boyfriend! I just wish there was a magazine like Maxim for women!

Just call it Playboy Lite.

Let me start by saying that I have a subscription to Maxim, and have had one for the past year and a half. Furthermore, I'll be renewing once that's up, and plan to continue doing so for as long as I can see.

With that out of the way, let's talk about the actual magazine, shall we?

Maxim is a magazine which is targetted at men. More specifically, single men between the ages of 18 to 35. Don't let this deter you if you aren't in this bracket however. I've had girl friends, and older people all read the magazine, and tell me how great it is, so it would seem that the creators have struck a common chord somewhere.

The main reason Maxim has become so popular in my opinion is the photography. You see, it's not just ANY girls on the covers and inside, it's famous or near famous girls in those various stages of undress. How is this very different from Playboy you ask? Well, first, they're still not nude, and second, Playboy deals mostly with unknown beautiful young women. Perhaps some would construe this as a shaky leg to be standing on, but by and large it's true. Just ask any guy who reads this magazine.

However, amidst all the clamor of zealots who wish to ban Maxim from newstands, and consider it vile, some quality writing emerges. What most people don't get is that the majority of the articles written in the mag are FANTASY based. I mean really, a story on how to arrange a menage a trois? How to have two girlfriends at once? It's a joke people! And a funny one at that. Speaking of humour, some may disagree, but this magazine consistently makes me laugh out loud, whether it's because of the funny recurring articles (the food tests, the "how to" articles, and the "where are they now" bits) or the hilarious comments underneath EVERY photo. Now sprinkle in some informative articles, such as the ones where questions are answered, real stories are reported, or deal with health issues, and now you've got something interesting to read.

As for the quality of writing, it may not be Shakespeare, but it's definitely easy to read. That's not a bad thing. Sure it's mostly fluff, but it's FUN fluff.

Another aspect of the magazine that I like is it's focus on tech goods, and new gadgets. Some might call it too material. I say so what. Always keeping me updated on what's new and advanced in the world, although oftentimes out of my price range, I find it fun reading about stuff like that.

Now to the cons. First, the magazine, as others have noted, has a wealth of ads. I've gotten used to them, but I can see why others would hate it. Second, the so called "fashion" spreads that Maxim does suck straight up. I've yet to see one that I haven't skipped over. Details did it and it sucked, and the same goes for Maxim. Finally, the cost per issue in Canada runs 7 dollars plus tax for an issue, pricey unless you hook up a subscription.

That's all I guess.

Maxim has maximum enterainment

I was first introduced to this magazine a few months ago, and I was instantly hooked. Every issue I saw had; helpful advice, funny jokes, and most importantly beautiful women. It had awesome articles on even the most taboo subject (i.e. loving a lady) and was interesting to read. Each month has hilarious jokes that are perfect for parties. The little things are what make Maxim great, where else would you learn about winning strategies for monopoly and pictures of beautiful women. It is like playboy, but you do not have to hide it under your bed, making it perfect for those who are interested for those under eighteen but still interested in adult topics.

Move Over Playboy...

Maxim Magazine, ahhhhhh, what a joy. Maxim has filled the void in the men's magazine world between the sometimes over the top Playboy and the snooze-a-lot filled Men's Journal. Maxim is the guys' version of "Cosmo" or "Redbook."
Maxim is a magazine filled with interesting articles on stuff that guys care about...sex, beer, and gadgets. Advice and hilarious stories are all over in this magazine. From strange sex stories on how to better pick up girls in a bar to keeping yourself healthy. Maxim is truly written for guys who are out there experiencing life, and who need some good advice on important topics.
I'd say that if you're a guy, and you want a magazine that has babes and interesting stories, and want a magazine that you wouldn't be embarrassed if Mom found, pick up a copy of Maxim.

Maxim - Not PORNO!

As a man who likes to think of himself as fairly educated I find it demeaning that I am categorized as a 'perv' just because I read MAXIM. This magazine is not only eye-candy. In fact, there is no nudity in any issue I have ever read. Sure, there are pictures of beautiful women in provacative positions but is this really that bad? Not really. Sports Illustrated contains women in these very same positions, and even some of the same women in fact, but there is no doubt SI is not pornography. The debate is only due to the language used on the cover and inside the magazine, but this is used strictly for shock value. The articles are very informative and I am sure they talk about much of the same things that a women's magazine would speak of. Things such as relationships, sex, health, and leisure activities are at the fore-front, not the pictures. So next time a woman gives you an awkward look while you are reading tips on how to satisfy your girlfriend in bed, call her over to check out exactly what you are looking at. Who knows, maybe if women actually read the magazine they would understand what it is all about.
